Jury Finds Prempro Caused Breast Cancer, Awards Three Women $134.5 Million

October 11, 2007—A Nevada jury awarded $134.5 million to three women who developed breast cancer following use of Prempro and Premarin. The verdict was the largest against drugmaker Wyeth related to its hormone replacement therapy.

A fourth woman settled before trial and passed away in April 2007 at the age of 59.

A Philadelphia jury found that Prempro was responsible for Mary Daniel's breast cancer and ordered Wyeth to pay $1.5 million in compensatory damages. The jury concluded that Wyeth was negligent in failing to provide adequate warnings about the risk of breast cancer associated with Prempro.
October 4, 2006
In the second case to reach trial, a Pennsylvania jury found that Prempro was the cause of Jennie Nelson's breast cancer and returned a verdict of $1.5 million.

In the first lawsuit to reach trial, an Arkansas jury found that Wyeth was not responsible for damages to a woman who developed breast cancer after using Prempro.

Reuters reports that the benefits of hormone replacement therapy were far less than originally thought. The drugs had no role in preventing heart disease, according to the report. Reuters also noted the increased risk of stroke for those taking estrogen replacement pills.
March 2, 2004
Researchers have halted another study assessing the risks of a hormone replacement therapy drug from Wyeth. The study found that Premarin increased the risk of stroke and found that harm outweighed any potential benefits.

A study published in the AMA Journal found that Prempro doubles the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of demential in women who began treatment at age 65 or older.
